When I go to the gym and I am exercising - not that hard, my heart often does big beats, like its jumping inside. It doesn't hurt but its an awful feeling and I often get it when I'm walking home from the gym too. Should I be worried?

I have heart palpitations and they are perfectly normal. But don't assume because someone else is normal doesn't mean that yours are too. You should call your doctor and see if you need to have some tests done to rule out any underlying cause. When I would have mine I would be doing nothing, like just sitting on the couch. Heart disease is the #1 killer in women.

A heart palpitation results when your heart either is pumping harder or faster then what is normal for you but typically the heart contraction is strong enough for you to feel. The heart rate and contractility (the strength with which the heart beats) is controlled by the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system which, respectively, release epinephrine (aka adrenaline) and nor-epinephrine. The sympathetic nervous system is responsible for "fight or flight" and the parasympathetic nervous system for "resting and digesting". Palpitations can be caused by a number of factors including stress, high caffeine intake, certain types of drugs, infection, etc. Usually heart palpitations don't indicate and underlying problem and are really common during pregnancy and in preteens, teens and even young adults (thank your hormones). Also, they are normal in athletes as well. However, if your family has any kind of cardiac history (ie heart attacks, heart murmurs, congestive heart failure aka CHF) then you should make an appointment to go see your primary care doctor or a cardiologist, just to be sure that the palpitations that you are feeling aren't masking an underlying problem.

I would stop exercising until you talk with your doctor. It's better to be safe than sorry. And It may be nothing so don't get too stressed out. I had a similar problem but it would happen when I was sitting, etc. - not when I exercised.

My doctor had me wear an event monitor for a while. When the results came back he was a bit concerned and sent me to a Cardiologist. The Cardiologist did an echo and a cardiac MRI and everything looked a-okay. Some heart palpitations are normal. Because the episodes bothered me he gave me medication to "smooth" out my heart rhythm. Thankfully that did the trick and I was able to wean off the medication.

FYI - Until you go to the doctor and get everything figured out stay away from caffiene and alcohol. Good luck!

If you were experiencing heart palpatations after casual exercise, it might be cause to worry. But heart plapataions? Quite normal, my dear.
Now that I'm done picking on your spelling, yes, I think you should have it checked out. I don't know how old you are but I suspect not very. It could be an indicator of a breathing problem, or a circulatory one, or it could be nothing at all. Let a doctor decide, please, rather than rely on wiseguys like me in this place!

I had the same problem when I was losing weight- the doctor told me palpitations are a sign of dehydraytion. Drink a lot of water and stay away from caffeine!!
