What kind is it? Your best bet is to find out what species it is and then do your research from there. In general, they like to be kept moist but not soggy, there needs to be adequate air circulation around the roots. If you are re-potting it, use orchid bark and orchid moss. Put it in a spot that gets enough light (some orchids do not need much light though- you will need to find out what kind it is). Check with the American Orchid Society- you can get good advice from there.

I've been growing orchids of all species for almost 20 years. Some species are over 50 years old, are very easy to care for. Most orchids like to dry out between waterings. They do not like being in drafty locations or in direct sunlight. Inside orchids like to be planted in orchid medium rather than soil although I have transplanted many of my indoor orchids into the soil outside and they do fine. If you live in an arid climate, like I do, mist their leaves now and again. Many growers will tell you to only use orchid fertilizer, but I have always used Miracle Grow and get awesome, prolific blooms.

Do not plant them in soil.
They grow on trees.
There are many orchids and most require indirect sunlight.
