Oh boy! A Sociology question!! I believe it's the same reason that "Soaps" have been popular for soooooooo many years. Most peoples lives are just plain BORING. They live vicariously through those who do things they'll never do and it entertains them on levels subconsciously that they aren't even aware of. Admittedly, some content of some of the shows are unique and a bit interesting. Plus the reward at the end...money, draws people in as they get to know about these people on the shows and root for their favorites...or jeer their least favorites and wait for them to fail. Of course, I dub them "unreality shows". You want reality? Get up, open your front door and go outside.

Because our culture is rapidly going downhill, and people like to watch others suffer, blow up at each other, screw up, and act for the camera (which they do in reality shows). People are too lazy to exercise, read a book, take a class, or have a life. THAT's why people like reality tv!

Idk...Some people might say that on reality shows they wish it were there own reality, and watch it to see how others are living.

BECAUSE NO ONE LIKES THE REALITY OF THEIR OWN LIVES SO WE WATCH THIS MAKE BELIEVE REALITY ON THE TV. WITH THESE SHOWS YOU NEVER GET THE WHOLE STORY, IT DOESN'T ALWAYS HAPPEN THE WAY IT LOOKS, THE EDIT THE SHOWS TO ATTRACT PEOPLE. I THINK MISERY LOVES COMPANY THAT IS WHY WE LIKE TO WATCH OTHER PEOPLES DRAMA THEN WE DONT HAVE TO FOCUS ON OURS.

I don't! I find the most popular ones to be mean spirited. They often show people at their worst. The hosts (Simon on American Idol) are cruel and unkind. Shows like Big Brother view people lying and being mean. Life is already too much that way.

Yes, because it lets me walk into someones house and see how they really live. How you keep your house tells a lot about you.
And I was raised on sit-coms, and am bored with them, they just seem silly now, so fake. Reality TV is...REAL!
I love COPS, scariest police chases, highway patrol, hot pursuit, MSNBC investigates, Dog the bounty hunter, life in the ER, paramedics, and some documentaries. Stuff like that.

People like them because of what I call the "soap opera" effect.
People like soap operas, sports and reality TV because it is ongoing drama between figures. It's conflict has no "predictable" ending. People like ongoing change because it mimics life.
Networks LOVE reality TV because it is cheap to produce and shows like American Idol costs them very little and generates SOOOOOO much money.

There are people who simply drift along, searching for somewhere they belong to in this world. Looking for a place to call their own, they want to know where they stand in life. Years go by, but the answers might still be unknown to them, even til their very last breath on their deathbeds. Maybe that's what this journey called life is all about.

People are naturally nosy. Another way for a nosy person to get into another person's drama is reality shows.

Its entertaining to watch other people act a fool on television plus it gives us somehthing interesting to watch when we are bored. Also its a good way to strike up a conversation the next day with your friends or family.
