Instead of joining any sight I'd suggesting buying a book like the game of chess by Siegbert Tarrasch study it for 8 months without playing any chess and you'll far better off than 9 out of 10 beginners who don't know rooks from bishops.
Another way to learn is to start from the beginning with a good, teacher Fide Master/Grandmaster I'll warn you that some of them are only out for the money it's a good idea to have some references from their students about what he or she is like as a teacher and what their experince was. They charge between $25-75$ an hour for lessons

I don't think so, but you can get "Chess for Dummies". It is a really nice book. Personally, I stink at chess.
