You produce mucus to trap dust, bacteria and other undesirables from entering your system. The mucus must then be expelled to remove the trapped particles or swallowed so the particles get digested before they can cause you problems like infections.

Boogers are used to capture dirt and particles so you won't have bad things going into your lungs. I believe the hard boogers are the ones who have used up all of their stickiness up so they are useless and the sticky ones are still doing their job:-)

We have hairs in our noses to stop dirt from passing through so basically, boogers are accumulated dirt on our noses.
