To decide the best 4x4 by a bunch of people telling you on the internet is a bit naive!
The best 4x4x FAR is the Landrover Rangerover
Luxury, comfort and not bad reliability (Like any new models)

I am assuming that you mean 4x4's that are available in UK as opposed to made by UK companies. My personal choice would be the Audi Q7, as I prefer a seven seater and it has a sleeker design that most 4x4's.

It all depends on what you want it for. If you want a no-nonsense off-roader, then Land Rover is the place to be. They may have questionmarks over reliability but their off-roading technology is second to none. Personally I think the new Discovery is awesome. If you've a smaller budget then the Nissan X-Trail 2.2dCi is pretty cool, or the Kia Sorento, due to be facelifted later this year...

Yes. You have answered your own question. High risk for pedestrians. They create blind spots for smaller vehicles in traffic. Too big for car parks. Poorly driven by people who only think of themselves. Most never go off road and are a very inefficient urban transport. Then there is the pollution! What is there to like about them?

It all depends on what you are going to use the car for, mainly off road then a Land Rover is unbeatable, mainly on road RAV 4, Audis and loads of others. I had a frontera that was a dog on the road but very impressive off road
