Smoking becomes a physical need for some of the body's systems. It will be a few weeks before those "habits" are slowly weaned out of him. A psychological dependence is formed because one of the things he's used to doing all day, is putting something in his mouth with his hand. Keep bowls of fruit such as grapes or raisins, not fat producing snack, around so that when he has the urge to make that hand to mouth motion, there's a nutritious substitute for him. Try to keep him out of places where other people are smoking, since second hand smoke can trigger increased urges. Lastly, buy the cheapest cigar than you can find, and let it sit out and go stale. When he just "Has to have a smoke", hand him that. It'll gag a maggot, and him too! Positive reinforcement that he shouldn't smoke.
