Okay, way before the Chinese in 1670, Egyptians, who else recorded the first known self propelled 4 wheel cart, that I know of. It is in their hieroglyphs. Next, Ford did not become a company until June, 1903. The Duryea Bothers formed the first car company in America. Benz, sure he was around, but before him was Gottlieb Daimler, Daimler/Chrysler, sound familiar? The same. Even before him in 1770 was the Frenchman Cugnot, although his was based on steam, it was still self propelled, but he was not nor did he form any car company that I could find in my reading. I have an extensive library all aimed at automotive history, trivia, you name it, I probably have it. There are so many names, but I will give you a few, NOT is any particular order other than Alphabetically. These are just a few names out of over 4'000 + car companies that I have books on. These are just a few names that you may recognize. Most of these date back a lot longer than you might think. Austin, Bentley, Benz, Bugatti, Buick, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Cord, Daimler, Dodge, Duesenburg, Durant, Duryea, Ford, Franklin, Peugeot, Porsche, Rolls, Royce, Willys. Okay that is just less than a hand full. Check out some of these names, recognize some? Louis Chevrolet actually first raced for Buick, then founded his own company, Frontenac Motor Company building race cars and equipment for FORDS! History can be interesting.

First car was built for a China Emporier back around 1670.

The oldest "automaker" is Mercedes Benz.

The oldest "american automaker" is Oldsmobile.

And to those that THINK Ford was something in cars....you are SO WRONG!!

Ford's contribution to cars was only the fact he built an assembly line production method. He did not invent the car, he did not invent the first car, he did not invent the 10th car, he did not invent any cars.

A man makes a "factory" work better and people think he's a "car guy", still makes me laugh to this day.

Quality & popularity, along with economics & Government help to name a few reasons. For some trivia; the first cars owned by GM were Buicks, then they purchased Olds, Chevy, Pontiac, Caddilac & GMC. Not in this order

Dude, they have been arguing this for a while, kinda like who first flew and who invented Calculus. The contenders are Ford and Benz followed closely by Mercedes

Most historians say Benz and I agree with them.

Mercedes and Benz did not join until around 1927 I think.
