Well, we need to cut gas consumption because of global warming and to conserve supply (we have used about 1/2 of all possible reserves). And it is know from a study in Sweden that it takes a 100% rise in prices to bring about a 10% reduction in consumption.
So it needs to be somewhere between $15 and $20 per gallon.
Pay now or pay later.

well since gas prices began to dramatically increase in the Reagan era gas prices have inflated by over two hundred percent. So if you take away the OPEC problems we have that have caused an increase in gas prices and add in the normal inflation of twenty years i would say that gas prices should be around $1.39...

"What is the ideal price of gas?"
In which country? I suppose you mean in the United States of America.
Population = 5% of the whole humankind;
Gas needs = 25% of the whole planetary gas needs each year.
In my view, the ideal price of gas in the U.S.A. must be high enough so that its population becomes aware they have to stop wasting such a precious source of energy.
So the ideal price of gas for the U.S.A. must be much higher than it presently is.
In my view...

$ 0.20 per litre.
If 1 gallon = 4.8 litres, than it will be US$ 0.96 per gallon.
In my country 1 gallon = 19 litres.
So it will be US$ 3.80.
