I assume you mean the Ancien Regime in France prior to 1789. The main opponents were the Middle Class leaders of the Middle Class that with all the rest of France exclusive of the Church (First Estate) and the Nobility- both Sword and Robe)- (Second Estate) comprised the Third Estate. This estate bore all the burdens of taxation without any of the privileges.
