Because as a nation we have bad eating habits. We learn to clean our plates because there are starving children in other countries. As a result we eat far more than we should.

Typically at any restaurant, you are served a portion big enough for two adults (however most adults want it all to themselves). My wife and I most often share a meal and are never left feeling hungry. Also, we DON'T drink sodas except on the rare occasion. Usually we drink water. It's the best stuff on earth for drinking.

Another problem with obesity is that people don't get enough exercise. Try walking to the local store rather than driving. My wife and I do that ALL the time (weather permitting). We avoid being lethargic and sitting watching TV all day or spending too much time on the computer. It's better to stay active than to sit and spread.

To remedy the problem we need to change our life habits, both eating and exercising. Doing so will reduce weight, lower heart disease and Diabetes and all the other weight related illnesses. Anyone can do it.

Best luck to all.

We have been raised in a culture that glorifies unnatural looking (airbrushed) women and put an unnatural standard of beauty on normal everyday people.

Combine that with a society that is spoiled and needs everything fast, (drive-thru's), is lazy (no cooking at home) and spends all of our time at home in front of the TV or the computer, or sitting on our butts at desks at school or work and you have just the right combination for unhealthy lifestyles to turn into obesity.

Especially since it seems like these standards of "beauty" imposed on us by the media seem so completely unattainable, normal people figure, "What's the use? I might as well do what I want and sit here, since I will never be that Kate Moss or Paris Hilton anyway."

The answer is that food in our society is truly irresistible. It is too convenient, right there in the frig, or in the package, or just drive through and tastes great. If we had to pick fruit from the tree or dig something from the ground for every meal we would be thinner. (Most aboriginal societies have insects in their diet and most of the people stay thin. We have chips instead.) Exercise can be helpful but few have the time or motivation to do enough. Plus, ironically the first effect of exercise usually is increased appetite. Control of input (portion control, calories, points, etc) with support from other people is what works. Persons who desire to weigh less must somehow make food less irresistible for themselves. And, we've learned that for it to be lastingly successful it must be accomplished gradually as a lifestyle change.

Because of all the advertising of fast food places and the longer working hours people are working to make ends meat. They have no time to exercise or even read up on any healthful tips. It also starts with many schools eliminating gym classes because they don't fit into the school budget, which is crap in my eyes.

I think that people are overweight because everybody is so busy. Nobody takes time to relax anymore. So it seems more convenient to go through a drive thru for dinner supper and even breakfast! There is no longer any time to make meals at home. Everybody is busy doing something.

There are many reasons, but mostly it's because people exercise less, spend more time watching TV and working/playing on the computer or video games, and eat more of the wrong kinds of foods, high in fat and calories.

Because the gov't allows the big food companies to sell UNHEALTHY-Fattening food to us.

We have to many choices, labels aren't always the real deal.

Lack of exercise, people work so hard to make ends meet that they are to tired to make time to take a quick walk.
