In what ways would the knowledge of the global wind patterns have helped a sixteenth century explorer sailing between Spain and the Northern part of South America?

well around the equator there is virtually no wind...its called the dolldrums...many ships were stuck here for a very long time and were forced to toss things over board to make the ship lighter and were even forced to eat horses and such...if they knew the wind patterns it would have been easier to sail down the coast of africa cross the atlantic around southern brazil and then sail up the coast of south america

if the sailors know the pattern of the global pattern, they would have known what way the wind is blowing, therefore the explorer would know what way to turn the sail
