Depends where you are coming from (and where in Spain you are going)...cheapest flights are through Easyjet from London (or other cities in the U.K.) Or Ryanair from Dublin (there are several destinations to small airports in Spain with really cheap fares such as Jerez de la Frontera or Valladolid)...all depends where you want to land in Spain. Jerez is near Seville, Valladolid is north of Madrid, south of Burgos).
Check out both:
www.easyjet.com
www.ryanair.com
All depends on your point of departure.
(Other than that the cheapest transportation is by bus, but the buses take forever and evidently are not too comfortable.)

Unlikely to get a cheap flight in August, kids are on school holidays, so flight costs are very high. Coach would possibly be the cheapest.

Hitch-hike.
It will be one heck of an adventure. If I was going round that time, I would give you a lift. I love driving down to Spain.

check the usual sites for airline companies, there is also a very uncomfortable 24 hour bus ride which is cheaper than flying
