Astigmatism means that the cornea is oval like a football instead of spherical like a basketball. Most astigmatic corneas have two curves – a steeper curve and a flatter curve. This causes light to focus on more than one point in the eye, resulting in blurred vision at distance or near. Astigmatism often occurs along with nearsightedness or farsightedness.
Signs and Symptoms
· Blurred vision (near and distance)
Detection and Diagnosis
Astigmatism can be detected and measured with corneal topography, keratometry, vision testing and refraction.
Treatment
Astigmatism can be corrected with glasses, contacts, or surgically. The most common surgeries used to correct astigmatism are astigmatic keratotomy (procedures that involve placing a microscopic incision on the eye) and LASIK. The objective of these procedures is to reshape the cornea so it becomes more spherical or uniformly curved.
Hope this helps.

Astigmatism is a vision condition that occurs when the front surface of your eye, the cornea, is slightly irregular in shape. This irregular shape prevents light from focusing properly on the back of your eye, the retina. As a result, your vision may be blurred at all distances.
People with severe astigmatism will usually have blurred or distorted vision, while those with mild astigmatism may experience headaches, eye strain, fatigue or blurred vision at certain distances.
Most people have some degree of astigmatism. A comprehensive optometric examination will include testing to diagnose astigmatism and determine the degree.
Almost all levels of astigmatism can be optically corrected with properly prescribed and fitted eyeglasses and/or contact lenses.
Corneal modification is also a treatment option for some patients

When your eyeballs are shaped more like footballs instead of being round.
Your eyes protrude farther out of your sockets than a normal person's.
I have slight astigmatism, and the only thing it affects are the type of contacts I need to wear.

Astigmatism-Defective vision caused by inequality of one or more refractive surfaces, usualy the corneal, so that the light rays do not converge to a point on the retina. May be congenital or acquired.
Please see the webpages for more details on Astigmatism.

Astigmatism occurs when light is defracted and cannot focus on the retina in the eye. This is due to deformities like bumps in the eyes.

I have one - the cornea on the eye is not perfectly round. For some people, it is very slight, like mine, but for others it can cost them up to $250 for fitting contact lenses. Mine are $50 (the cheapest fitting rate). Not covered by insurance, either, even though it is required to get the lenses. It affects my lens prescription by and additional -.25, so for people who have a larger one it could be a lot worse.
