The earliest reference to what may be the original quote appears below. I couldn't find anything linking this with Nostradomus, however. I believe he was French?
The difference between the two quotes have been placed in parenthesis by me. I'm kinda thinking the grammatical error made by Gide may be due to translation.

"It is better to be hated for (what) you are than to be loved for (something) you are not." Andre Gide

A French novelist, Gide was born December 22, 1869 and died February 19, 1951.

Hope this helps!

Attributed to "Phlostigin Verdigris"

The name is made of two words for colors, in order, orange and green, which are featured on the cover art for the band Type O Negative.

The quote also seems to originate on their liner notes, attributed to him on the back of their "The Least Worst of Type O Negative." On the "Bloody Kisses" album, they identify him as the the conductor of the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra. While there is a Brooklyn Philharmonic, no one with this name appears ever to have been associated with them.

The actual author of the quote seems to be unknown. There is nothing like it in the writings of Nostradamus.

Actually it dates back (and sorry about the spelling) Nostradamius. He once stated in his many writings "IT IS BETTER TO BE HATED FOR WHO YOU ARE THEN LOVED FOR WHO YOU ARE NOT". His main writings to this was to demonstrate to the world that no matter who you are you or what you are be that person, do not try to change for the environment around you, nor try to satisfy other people because of their expectations for you.

I unfortunatly do not know where is came from, however I truely wish more people would listen to this. Everyone would be so much happier if they didn't try to be something they are not.
