A template is a set of pre-designed formats for text and graphics on which new pages and webs can be based. After a page or web is created using a template, you can customize the page or web. Usually, the template will have clearly labeled spaces or positions (like textboxes or image areas) for you to mody with your own text and graphics. Templates can save you time by giving you a pre-made document in Microsoft Office which you can then edit to meet your needs.

To browse Microsoft's template collection, go to http://office.microsoft.com/en-au/templates/default.aspx.

Templates, whether for microsoft or anything else for that matter, are a pre-formatted sheet. It's like having stationary with the company name and address already pre-printed. All you have to do is date it, and write the letter itself. But you don't have to keep putting the company's name and address on there, because it's already there.

So a resume template for example would already have sections like objective and work history for you to fill in. The main advantage of templates is that they're time-savers and a way to standardize things for multiple users.
