For instance, I would like a gmail suffix (gmail.com) rather than a googlemail suffix (googlemail.com). Because I'm in the UK I'm automatically given a googlemail suffix.

The Websites determine the location of your country through your IP address. As you may be aware the IP addresses are represented in the following decimal format xxxx.yyyy.aaaa.bbbb. The first eight digits are the pointer to your country and are given by your ISP. There are several sites which offer you this service, netcraft and ip2country are the ones I am using. If you are using Firefox as your browser I would suggest you download ShowIP as an extension to Firefox. With this utility you will automatically come to know the IP address of every website you visit. Use this address in ip2country and you will be pleasantly surprised of the details you will generate. The location of the website being only one.

Apart from tracing your computers or proxies IP address to which country and even company its been allocated to your machine there is a simpler way. Many companies actually just ask your installation of windows which region / country you are in. If its a Windows XP machine also have a location setting that has to be filled in when WinXP is installed. You will find it in Start > Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Regional Tab > Location drop down list. Why not change it and see what response you get next time you try.

They may not be bale to trace an IP address right to your house (your ISP can though) but they can look and see who owns that block of IP's and where they register from. The same reason when you go to questionable websites and say "girls from New York are waiting for you" and you live in new york that's how they know. They know that your IP is (fake one) 208.55.39.216, and that an ISP in new york own a bunch of IP's and that one falls in the range.

They trace your IP number.

Sometimes you can trick them by sending out a false mask, for example, I have mine re-routed half way round the world, not because I'm paranoid or anything, but because I don't think they need to know that kind of information about me.
