Historically, the National and American leagues did not get along. Each league considered the other league a threat as they would buy out each other's players. So when the idea of merging the leagues together became a reality, the name of the championship between the two became a problem. The National League considered themselves National Champions while the American League considered themselves American Champions. So it was decided whoever won the series between the two leagues would "World" Champions since at the time, baseball was only found in baseball.
Many also believed that Baseball would catch on in other countries and they would forn there own leagues and then be allowed to participate for the World Series, but for one reason or another that did not happen, however this idea can be seen in the Little League World Series as many different countries send there kids to play in hopes to win the World Title.

The World Series is the only true world-sporting event, where the best team plays in the best league with the best players. Unlike the European Football leagues, they have a league for each country, and elite teams in it so since they don’t all play against each other you may never actually know who the best team is. In baseball, the cream raises to the top so to speak and the best team wins. Because MLB will and does find the best players from around the world and have them play in the league, below is a list of some countries that have had players play in the World Series.
Aruba, Austria, Australia, Bahamas, Colombia, Cuba, Curacao, Czechoslovakia, Dominican Republic, England, Finland, France, Germany, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Panama, Poland, Russia, Scotland, South Korea, South Vietnam, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Ukraine, Virgin Island, Venezuela, and Wales just to name a few

Ha ha even the americans dont know there own history, which isnt a surprise really.
The believe that is was named after the paper is an urban myth.
Its called it because when it was launched the Americans named it the World Championship Series believing it to be the World championship of Baseball and later shortened it to just the World series. And it is not open to the world, just Major League Baseball teams only in usa & canada
Uk fat, hmm, someone calling the kettle black me thinks, USA has the highets obesity rate of any country.

Because when it was named the World Series the only baseball teams in the world were in America. You have to realize that the World Series has been played for a LONG time... it's not just American arrogance.

The easy answer is:- because they're cretins, but in reality. It's called the world series as it's open to the whole world to compete. Most countries could not cope with the monotony of a game where a man dressed as a lion does a lap of the 'arena' every time a ball is pitched. (Well it did in the game I went to see live!). However, Cuba, Japan and Canada (at least) provide teams.

First off, count how many different players represent different countries that are currently in the big leagues. Major League Baseball is the mecca of baseball. Do you see a young Domincan growing up dreaming of playing for some pro Domincan League? No! He dreams of playing in the Big Leagues in the States and all the fame and fortune that it brings. Every kid in every country who grows up with a gift to play baseball dreams of playing in the Big Leagues. So, since the "World Series" is the championship that crowns the best team with the best players that usually has a mix of international players the term "World Series" is accurate.

Silly people... :-) "The World" was a newspaper on East Coast in the 1800s. They sponsored the "World Series". Hence the name. Anyone to challenge?
