I was just wondering what would happen if you put 3x the amount of oil your engine actually requires? Would the car continue to run? Would it ruin the engine, if so then how?

as the engine heats up oil pressure will increase. if your lucky the o-ring on the filter will give up first and just make a big mess, or the rest of the seals in the engine will blow out and you will have a rebuild on your hands.

One thing you can damage from too much oil is due to loss of pressure caused by the oil getting beaten into foam by the crankshaft.

If you have ever seen the infomercial where the gizmo turns skim milk into a delicious whipped topping then you can imagine what the oil end up being like after it gets tossed around.

If there is way too much oil the crankshaft will actually "hunt" for the easiest way to expel the oil, probably ejecting the dipstick or worse breaking seals and/or spewing oil out the valve covers.

You would ruin the engine. There is space where the oil gets pumped thru the engine, and too much oil will blow the pan in the engine.

That's a lot of extra oil. Smoking from the exhaust would be the first symptom and fouling of the spark plugs would be another. Hydraulic lock of the cylinders is a possibility that could bend con rods. This much extra oil is not good. Drain some out when it is cold. Jules, auto tech and lecturer. Australia.

When you over fill your engine, the oil will aerate and foam up inside the engine. Once the oil foams up inside it loses its ability to lubricate. Eventually the engine will seize.

no longer something will ensue. it wont blow the gaskets and seals. How can that ensue if the crankcase is ventilated. And it wont injury the crankshaft. If the engine is burning or leaking the oil (as may be the only reason to characteristic between adjustments), this is going to shield the greater oil in time.

Maybe a quart or two..... no big deal..... 3 times well..... it'll get whipped up by the crank, foam.... not only that, could blow seals and of course make the engine smoke like a smoke house.
