PMS symptoms may be relieved by avoiding caffeine, sugar, salt, white flour, red meat, dairy, butter, monosodium glutamate (MSG), fried foods, and processed foods during the two weeks prior to menstruation. A variety of herbal remedies may alleviate symptoms associated with menstrual problems. These include:
• black cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa): mood swings,tension, establishing ovulation (an important source of
phytoestrogens). The German Commission E, however, states that women should not take black cohosh for menstrual problems for longer than six months because of the risk of side effects.
• black haw (Viburnum prunifolium): cramps
• chamomile (Matricaria recutita): mood swings, tension, and cramps
• cramp bark (Viburnum opulus): cramps
• dandelion (Taraxacum dang gui): fluid retention and bloating
• dong quai (Benincasa cerifera): PMS symptoms, cramps, irregular cycles, heavy bleeding, or bleeding in between cycles
• fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum): irregular bowel movements

Advil or tylenol or aleve will certainly work, though you will develop a tolerance for them and over time may need to take more and more.
I have found that really vigorous exercise helps, which of course feels like the last thing you want to do when you have cramps! But trust me, if you exercise, play basketball, go for a run or swim, or even just a fast walk if that's all you have the energy for, you will feel better.
Prostaglandins are what cause cramps. The best way to ease cramps is to get the prostaglandins out of your system (instead of just suppress the pain symptoms, which is what advil etc does). Exercise helps clear prostaglandins and other hormones from your body more quickly than if you're just sitting around.
Do give it a try. It doesn't feel great at first, but then you can feel much better.

I have severe cramps when it's my time of the month too. I've found that taking IB Profin helps tremendously. But you have to take 800 mL of it. It's a safe dose to take, trust me. It's doctor approved. Just make sure you eat something before you take it or right after you take it. But if you have already taken asprin, DO NOT take the IB Profin... asprin and IB Profin combined is harmul to you and will make you very sick. If you drink something with caffiene in it when you take the pills, it will cause the pills to work faster. Also, if you have a heating pad, place it on the lowest part of your back, like right over your tailbone and lay down on your stomach. DO NOT put it on your stomach! for some reason, putting it on your stomach makes it hurt more. I hope this helps!

I am a HUGE fan of Advil gel caps.
Aside from a pain reliever, take a hot bath and then try to move around. Light exercise and stretching can help relieve the craps a bit.
When all else fails, use a heating pad on your stomach and hug a pillow.

I personally prefer Naproxin Sodium. You can get it at any drug store. Most cramp medicines have Naproxin Na along with medicines to allieviate water retention and other things. I find that just taking the generic brand Naproxin Na works quickest. If period pain continues, talk with your gynie about birth control pills - they help control the hormones that cause severe cramping, heavy bleeding and irregular periods.

Get on a birth control pill, it is a highly effective way to help out with difficult menstrual cycles. Go visit a gynecologist to find out which one will benefit you the most.

midol, a hot water bottle, heated pads (u can buy a 4 pac of these at the grocery store i think), if u have to go out wear a big shirt so that u can unbutton your pand, food(i eat lots on my period and never feel guilty)

I take about 4 asprins and they go away it takes about a 1/2 hour but it works for me.
