What is it about the taste that means all those burger places always have to put them in their burgers?

Because gherkins are great! And not as threatening as one perceives.

I don't know if this is true but I have heard that there is so much sugar in the bun that a burger would be classified as confectionary if it weren't for the gherkin. They put the gherkin in to tip the balance back into the savoury category.

Don't know. I'm not a 'gherkin' fan either. (I think in the US we call this a pickle?) However, I do like the homeade kind - they are nice and crunchy. And, you can taste the spices better - my mom does this with different peppercorns...mmmmm....but, hate the soggy mess they stick on the burger.

It is true, Americans like their pickles on the burger. But, most of us are picky about it. And, the crap the McDonalds puts on there is gross. Where I live we make our own...it's fresh and spicy.

How annoying is that, i usually pick them out. If you ask for no gherkin you often get no sauce and onion too!

Because their burgers taste like crap, so they put everything but the kitchen sink in them to kill the taste.

Because the salty flavor brings out the taste of the food.

Same reason they have lettuce, tomato, and onions. Just the way it started I guess, or maybe someone figured out that most people like them that way and its cheaper and faster to make them all that way unless someone wants a special order.
