Well statistics say that people who live together before marriage have a higher divorce rate. I don't think it's a good idea anyway. It'd be messy if you breakup, how do you divide things? There's no laws to protect you from getting screwed over if you have a bad breakup. Plus then what are you saving for marriage? What will be new and exciting if you get married? Where is the motivation to actually get married? You're also a bit young at 18, people change a lot after high school. Just some things to think about.

Living together can be stressful. At 18, you haven't had all that much time to learn how to handle it yet.

If you've been together for 5 years already, it's probably a pretty special thing you have -- maybe it's worth waiting a little while longer for a bit more work and life experience. It would be a shame if a great relationship didn't work out because of the silly arguments that can happen.

As for marriage without living together, IME, now that's a bad idea!

I don't think its a bad idea. Some people choose to remain unmarried which can have its disadvantages, mostly on a legal standpoint although the domestic partner laws are changing some of that. I personally did live with my ex before we married. Although the marriage didn't last, I don't regret it. I will tell you this though, some people (I'm not going to say men, because I am sure women do this too) decide they don't want to marry when they are getting the benefits without the legal status. It does give you a chance to know each other better. Like one person said, you truely do not know a person until you have lived with them. There are many arguments for and against living together before marriage. I personally see nothing wrong with it.

you guys have obviously done alot of growing up together. It is a GOOD idea to live together before you are married. Then you can figure out if you can actually stand living with that person. People are different when you live with them. IN this day and age, it is not realistic to marry someone you have never lived with. Despite what the "other people" may say. (you know who you are) Just make sure you dont get in trouble with paying bills and such. When I was 18 I moved out with my best friend.. bad idea. We are ok now,... but when dealing with money, things can get difficult. Just make sure you can move back home if things dont work as well as you hoped. Good Luck! And dont forget, no matter how much you love someone, they are a person too. People are not perfect, and a serious relationship doesnt always come easy. And it turned out my husband was the first guy I ever lived with.. luckily the last! :) You know what is really best for you.

The problem is that some people seem to think that living together is a rehearsal for marriage and the truth is that they are so different that it's like eating an apple to find out what an orange tastes like.
Live on your own. If you have been together for 5 years at 18 then you have never really gotten to know anyone else. or yourself.
Live on your own and date if you like. Find out who you are before you blend lives with another person.

Sometimes its bad, it depends on how your personallites are.

When you first start dating you are all in to each other, doing everything for each other. After the years pass you are not living together, so you plan things, then you go home and do whatever you want.
Once you decide to move in, you start to realize that there is alot of down time. Guys like to be alone and watch tv, play golf, play video games for hours and hours. Girls like to cuddle and watch tv with you when there is nothing to do. Girls will get mad if you veg out in front of your computer, and tend to say "why am I here if all you do is play on your computer/videogames/golf/cars/ect.."

Its hard to be with someone 24 hours a day. All the conversations have been said, all the dates have been dated, all the fun sex has been had.

On the other hand, you'll find out if you can live together forever pretty fast. If you move in, and hardly fight, find your own things to do during the down times, have fun watching some show on tv or playing Uno for the 100th time. When this happens, you may as well get married.

Are you planning on going to college? Because that will change everything.

I think is a bad idea. You'll have a long long time to know him and viceversa.
There is something that u should have clear: your expectations about a life together.
You both always will have deffects and these are not going to change for love, so you both should learn to deal with your differences and love each other in despite of them.
Begining a life together must be taken as a definitive decision to build up a strong union, not as a good try. Anf I think living together is one of those "good tries".

I've always believed people should live together before they get married. Things are a lot easier when a person can leave whenever they want and go back to their own home. It's much more difficult actually living with another person. you have to get used to all their quirks. If you live togetehr before you get married, you won't be surpised at the things the other person does, as far as how they live, and how you deal with that.

I've been living with my girlfriend for a year now. She told me what she was like before I came here, but she's very different than what she said. I've grown accustom to most of her quirks though, and we plan to marry sometime next year.

Yes but only if you want to get married. Because the man will say we already live together, what is the point.

However I do recommend test driving before buying. So do it no more than a year. Find out what the person is really like, get hitched or move on.
