How do we determine if a given set of solids are soluble / insoluble in a given solvent? For eg: How do we find out if out of Na2CO3 , MgCO3 , ZnCO3, Na2SO4 , PbS , which of these are soluble in water..

there are sets of solubility rules for all cations given certain anions.

Acetates and nitrates are always soluble.
All alkali metal compounds are soluble along with ammonium compounds.
Chlorides are soluble except for Ag, Pb, and Hg.
Hydroxides are insoluble except for alkali metals (IIA family gets more soluble as you go down the column).
Sulfides are insoluble except for alkali metals.
Sulfates are soluble except those with Ca and down the family and Pg, and Hg.
Chlorates and chlorites are soluble.
Carbonates, phosphates, and sulfites are insoluble except for alkali metals and ammonium.

just take every substance in a seprate test tube with water and try to dissolve. The result 'll b for everyone 2 see.

Take samples of each solid and try to dissolve them in water. If they don't dissolve then they are insoluble.

solubility rules all group one Na sodium....and ammonium compounds are soluble......Carbonates CO3 are insoluble except group 1 and ammonium, Sulphides are insoluble except group 1 and sulphates SO4 are soluble except a few

Take a small amount of each one and try to dissolve it in water. It doesn't get any easier than that.

Besides testing it in water, you should also calculate the molar ratio. The molar ratio would tell you which one will dissolve in water.
