When I was a kid growing up in the '50s & early '60s, I heard this a lot but never knew where it came from.
I seem to recall a little recitation that goes: "Puddin Tain', that's my name. Ask me again and I'll tell you the same!"

I also recall that The Earls ("Remember Then") referenced the term in another of their songs in the early sixties but I can't remember the name.

All I know is the it is considered a "traditional African American children’s rhyme." I looked and looked...this was all I could find.
