Yes, I usually spend my holidays here :) As a local, I would recommend that you do not stay more or less isolated in the holiday places. Travel around to see the country and the people as they normally are. I personally think that if you don't choose an all-inclusive package and are a bit more adventurous, you might have a nice time spending a day or two travelling along the coast and staying in small private hotels/bed&breakfast in the villages and small towns from Varna to Burgas. Never change money in the street - you can change money safely in any bank with no comission. Naturally beware of pickpockets - resort places attract most of the unpleasant peolple you wouldn't otherwise meet. If you want to have a change - go to the mountains - it's healthy, cheap and extremely beautiful. Rila and the Rhodopes are my favourite. Check out also some SPA places (Augusta near Hissar; Katarino close to Razlog; Devin), which are becoming more and more popular in the last two years. This web-page may help you:

You might also drop me an e-mail - I'd be happy to help.
Good luck and have fun :)!

just got back on monday, i loved it!
the weather was 37 degrees, the locals are so unbelievably friendly- they call everybody "friend". You do get hassled a bit by people trying to sell you things or to go into their bar and have a "free drink", but a polite "No" is all it takes to stop them pestering you.
It is advisable to change your money to levs before you leave- I have heard horror stories about people changing money on the street and being given toy money, then badly beaten up when they return.
Expect to pay no more than 4levs (about £1) at the most for a pint of the national beer, and roughly 13levs for a meal.
Beware of customs at the airport- they WILL try to stop you for ANYTHING and try to get money off you- just explain that you will not give them money and don't follow them if they tell you to go to an office with them.
Have a lovely trip- there is a 2hr time difference from the uk- i'm sure you will love it!

Hi
I've been so many times, so 2 years I've been living there. Veliko Tarnovo -220 km from Varna. Beautiful place for a tourist, not so good to live there permanent if you don't know the laws and rules. Lots of corruption, but as I said great for a holiday. The cost is expensive - 1 kg of peaches in Varna is 1.80lv, but only 10 km from there in st.Konstantin and Elena resort is 7 leva.

Yes, I went skiing last year. In Pomporovo which is inland. A friend of mine has been to the coast and say that it is very nice there too. Very very cheap. Like 60p for a pint, £3 for a meal and they are decent too.
Tips: Albena is nicer than Sunnybeach for summer hoilday.
Don't pack too much coz you'll want to bring tons of booze home with you. Pomporovo was good for fake merchandise, Diesel, Bench etc. Take tablets for upset stomachs because the native food is somewhat of an acquired stomach lining. Ham and cold pasta for breakfast?!?!?!?
Lovely place though, I'd go again.

I did a bit of work in Sofia a few years a go - what a dump. I saw 2 dead people lying in the street. The place was law-less and the boys I was working with (locals) said the government was corrupt and run by the mafia.
They all wanted to leave and go to Germany, England etc - can't say I blamed them.
Cheep beer though...

Yes. Everything is cheaper than the UK, but not in the big resorts.
Here is a good website, where fans of Bulgarian holidays will give any info you need.
Personally I would avoid SunnyBeach, it's overcrowded and overbuilt. You can see pics of all sea resorts here:

you will get almost something contained in the better cities,in case you stumble on a 'metro'save or 'picaddilly'(bit like Makro/asda)you will get all english manufacturers too. I.E.Heinz beanz/ketchup ect, even strong previous Demestos!yet you in person-friendly words won't be able to get any good Sir Francis Bacon! all small shops even in villages promote cows milk/eggs/bread ect, brilliant bread from large shops above as maximum flow stale too kwik with the warm temperature.

i went with my family three years ago to golden sands,,, do not go any where near it ,,trust me,,it is full of prostitutes and pimps with guns who control the main resort high street,, the place is cheap but very boring and definetly dangerous,, our hotel had a brothel right below it and so do most others,, these girls approach you even when you are walking with your wife,, they are expert pickpockets and honestly you have to avoid at all cost,, i can not comment on other resorts but i wont be going back i dont care how cheap it might be ,,
