This depends GREATLY upon your insurance company. One of my friends had insurance that wouldn't cover pregnancy costs if it wasn't a physician (no midwife-only birth).

My insurance at that time would cover both types.

Be sure to consult a physician before deciding on getting a midwife. I have a medical condition that made it much, much safer to go with a physician.

Also, be sure that, if your insurance covers midwives, that they will also cover costs if the midwife has to transfer your care to a physician (for example, a premature baby or on-set of previous medical problems, like epileptic seizures - something that a midwife is not qualified to treat).

A large number of hospitals have midwifes on staff. Insurance companies have been known to pay charges for the delivery of a baby by a midwife because it saves them a tremendous amount of money. If you are planning to have your baby at home with a midwife most insurance companies will not pay for the services of a midwife. My advise to you is that you should read your contract and if you still have questions call your benefits coordinator.

I would think it does, but if you have insurance I would go with a doctor because you never know what could happen. My baby went into distress and I had to have an immediate c-section. Midwives aren't qualified to handle something like that. I know someone who went with a midwife - she was in labor, but they sent her home, and she wasn't home more than 10 minutes when they had to turn around and go right back in. They should have never sent her home to begin with.

depends on what kind of insurance you have. I mean through what company. You need to call the 800 number listed on your insurance card and ask them!

usually it does, but it also depends on how your insurance is set up. all you would have to do to find out for sure is just call up your insurance company and ask they should know just by looking your policy up on the computer.
