Recently a man came out to inspect our house for termites. Some evidence of same was discovered toward the rear of the dwelling: a single point. The house is only four years old, but it is located in the woods, which is a natural haven for these little critters. He said he couldn't spray the perimeter of the house for termites, because our well was too close to the dwelling. He cited state law, but gave no reference number to check out same. My questions are (1) What is the minimum distance. (2) under what code could I find this? The closest point to the well is 48 ft. away and that point is on a corner of the dwelling, so it is not like the entire house is close to the well. Also, the nearest water fixture within the house is probably 75 ft. from the well. The reason why I am asking, is that the alternative way to get around this DISTANCE problem, is thee times the cost, and I'd just as soon spray the house myself rather than get into that situation.

That's "3 times the cost", not thee times the cost...alternate avenue to spraying perimeter.

I live in Tennessee, so does that help? I can't imagine this would vary greatly from state to state, or I would have stated living in the state of confusion. This has to be some EPA boondoggle ruling.

Don't waste your time or money. You can't kill termites with spray. You have to use 100 gallons or more that an exterminator pushes a rod in the ground to get the chemical to get to the footer of the house and on the inside of the house. Do you really want to drink pesticides? The best chemical for termites is Termidor. Go and search on google for (Termidor label) and read the label and if you want read the MSDS sheet also. You will kind of get a better idea why exterminators are afraid to use chemicals around wells and streams. (BIG FINE)
I have customers that try and do it themselves, fail, then try the 1/3 cost treatment and of course that fails cause you can't use the GOOD STUFF anymore the stuff that lasted for 30 yrs or more.
Then they have to pay for the baiting system anyway. I've treated over a 1000 houses with the Sentricon baiting system and it works. The inside Above Ground Station works like a charm if you have active termites inside your house and if you didn't try to do it yourself and spray that area. There is nothing you can buy at the store that works, remember, your trying to kill the colony not just kill a couple termites. Subterranean termite colonies are deep underground so spraying on the top surface doesn't do anything. Go with Sentricon! Go with a small company. Hope I was helpfull.

You've got a big problem. In most states, the MINIMUM distance from house to well is 50 ft. , not 48 or 49, and any termite treatment co. worth it's salt won't treat anything closer, most are leary if treating at a 50' distance. I've had friends here in Mich. that have had to have a new well drilled away from their house to make it elligible to be treated because their well was in the basement.
If Bike Hunter's suggestion about the bait system works that would be the way to go. Good luck. You're going to need it.
