I'm grateful to have been born a citizen here because I think it's the country with the most possibilities - the country that has the best chance of recovering from its mistakes, based on the protections of the Constitution.

That being said, I'm living in a time in America that saddens and disheartens me. I saw a man get "elected" twice who just seems hell-bent on not listening to anyone, not even the generals whose job it is to assess the viability of military actions. I watch as children get less and less educated, for several reasons: terrible or absent parenting and an education system that's falling apart. Manners have largely disappeared from the face of the country: I watch as children approach the bakery in the grocery store for their free cookie and say, "Gimme a cookie." As a nation, we are gluttons. We're either gluttons to be as skinny, big-boobed and silicone-laden as we can be, or we're gluttons for the "super size" portions that invade the restaurant industry (and follow us to our homes). Moderation today just means you don't eat crap at every meal, not that you only eat it once a week. People assume that since their Cocoa Puffs have been fortified with iron and are made from whole grains that their breakfast is healthy. The description of "ugly American" seems more and more apropos.

As I said, I'm saddened and disheartened right now. I try to raise my children well, but when I watch other children it feels like I'm swimming against the current. How do I teach my daughter to get in line to go down the slide when the other kids just push her and others out of the way to get to the top first?

Sigh.

I love this country. The level of opportunity is unsurpassed. The government although flawed, as all governments are, is still a far sight better than the alternatives. The freedoms we enjoy are unmatched anywhere else in the world.

reichman2007 - you have a limited and narrow view. I have been all over the world, so in the future why don't you speak to own personal views and let everyone else speak for theirs individually.

Hate to enlighten you hannahonelove but we were bombing people before Bush. Clinton carried out bombing in Iraq, Bosnia, and Somalia, or did that escape your notice.

America is the best most human, generous and free society in the World You also have the biggest and best weapons and the most power. But you seem to be like a child playing with this power and having tantrums when you don't get your way.

I absolutely would not live anywhere else.I have traveled alot and I feel confident we have more available to us in everything.
I still believe anyone that works hard can achieve their dreams. I understand some get more or less than they believe they deserve, but that's what makes America a land of opportunity.

I am ashamed at the moment that such a wonderful country has been terrorized by President Bush and his cronies. We were not where our founding fathers wanted us to be before Bush but at least we were not trying to turn our backs on what this country stood for before Bush. Now we are headed from the foundation that this country was built on. We no longer want peace and harmony through out the world, we only want to be powerful and in charge. That was not the way this great country was intended; we were intended to be a friend to all and invite all to come and be free not bombing people until they see things our way.

I love my country and find it, overall, a great place to live. I wouldn't choose any other place to live.

Having traveled to many other countries, I still find America to be the best place to live and be free.
