Is welfare contributing to teenage pregnancies?

Question

Working in healthcare, I find a lot of teenagers who are trying to get pregnant -even when they have no education, no job, no marraige and no potential way to support themselves and the child. They do not accidentally get pregnant they have a deliberate plan. Unwed,uneducated and unfit girls on 5 psychiatric medications - and their boyfriends are visibly upset with the doctors when they tell them that they are not (yet) pregnant -like it was the doctor's responsibility to impregnate them!
On the other hand a girl going to vocational college and holding two jobs with uncontrolled diabetes was told by welfare office that the only way she can get the govenrment to pay for her insuline pump and diabetic supplies was for her to get pregnant and go on welfare.
I believe, the best way for goventment to curb teenage pregnancies is to stop sponsering them. If there was no garuntee of welfare checks for foreseeable future, most these girls would not get pregnant.

I totally agree! Giving teen parents welfare is not helping matters any. I don't want a penny of my taxes going towards irresponsible teens. I think it should be against the law for a minor to be the guardian of another minor anyway. Let's give these babies away at birth to adoptive families who can take care of them.

What you say is true to some extent. But there are other reasons girls, young girls, are intentionally trying to have a child. They have no self-esteem and no common sense. They want a child to love and to get love back from. They want to feel in control of something because their lives are generally out of control. They think a baby is going make everything right with the world. They are not educated in any way about how the world works. It's a very, very sad thing.

I don't think it would stop them, most of these kids have no supervision and think the world will be just dreaming when the have a baby. Maybe if the government made parents responsible for taking care of these kids some of it , not all would come to a halt. They need to make both parents of the girl and boy equally responsible to pay the bill and care for the baby. maybe then parents would step up to the plate and know where their kids are and what there doing.Then once these kids turn eighteen it there responsible.,even if they have to do community service to pay the bills.

I absolutely agree with you. Having lived for over thirty years in a poor urban neighborhood I watched the change as young women (and men) became less ambitious and more dependent on the dole. By the time I moved I was seeing third generations of families living on welfare. Unfortunately it is just another example of how well intentioned government programs often produce the opposite effect of what they intended to do.

I agree with you 100%. The government essentially rewards pregnant single mothers. And yes, many of them do deliberatly get pregnant. They would love to get free groceries and healthcare -- and that is their perogative. It's a sad world, isn't it? Instead of promoting welfare they should give free birth control -- even if the girls are over 18. I'm sure that would be much more beneficial and cost effective.

if you want this to stop you have a choice.....stop supporting a government that enables this type of behavior and demand reform at the state level. i work for a non-profit health clinic..people who work but don't make enough to afford insurance but just over the limit for any kind of help.....they struggle to buy medicine and feed their family's while staying healthy enough to keep working, yet in walks a very well nourished person with 4 dirty, underfed kids, living in public housing because " they owe me", no job or plans to get one, no education or plans to get any, complaining that their public assistance check for more then i make in a month was one day late! and that she'll only be able to get 2 cartons of smokes this week. why work for 7 bucks an hour when you can sit on your fat *** while your kids run wild,talk on the phone, find a way to trade your kids food stamps for cigerates and beer( kids dont need milk, they like kool-aid) and hookup with what ever looser sperm donor is hanging round and get paid!!!! And even better you can live around others who think the same way so you'll never have the strength to do it on your own.( real conversation with a patient!!)
the state i live in stopped all this out of control use.....if you need help fine but not forever after 5 years your cut off but your kids will get help( medicaid/food stamps but limited),they'll pay for you to learn a trade or go to school and provide daycare so you can. you provide info with finding daddy(s) to be responsible for their kids or no help for you.if your convected of a drug related crime, forget it and after the 3rd kid, you can have more but the state wont give you any more money and wont foot the bill for your health care. kids are always helped but they didn't ask to be born to selfish,inconsiderate,brainless dingles looking for a free ride on the backs of you and i. youll never stop people from having sex....and tell us how to reason with a 14 year old(that if your going to have sex use a condom or take your pill everyday) who's idea of responsability is keeping up with her cell phone and TRL! while not all people on assistance fall into this trap, most learn to milk the system not caring about the effects and worse creating a cycle of indifferents and hoplessness in their children. for a land of milk and honey, the ones who work as sucking high on tit while the grasshopper fiddles.

this is an incredible topic and admire your concern. i absolutely agree that it is not fair for stupid little girls to be dependent on america's tax money. when a teenager deliberately gets pregnant, she wants to be viewed as an adilt, not even that, she just wants people to think she's responcible,i have known too many people who have thrown away their carreer goals to raise a baby, unwed even.everyone needs a little more commen sence in their life now a days!

Couldn't agree more. I heard on NPR that 16,000 people in the USA die every year because they have no health insurance. We spend on wars but not on kindness. I work in homecare and can't afford medical care myself.

alot of black girls get pregnant on purpose to get welfare and child support. its horrible. but i think BET and modern black culture has more to do with it. im black but i sure hate *******
