I am going through a teacher credential program, the "master teacher" to which I am assigned, rules by fear and intimidation. If I allow the children to be children, I receive lower scores. Isn't the purpose of a credential program to teach the teacher? Or is it to vent ones frustrations on innocent children and those who try to help?

Not all women, it seems to be those that are older, recieved their credential in the early 80's.

I use the gender specific term as a means to draw attention to this question. Male teachers also may also have this issue. It is in a K-6 class. Kids do not naturally sit in a seat for two hour blocks, staring at books, without getting ancy. I don't subscribe to the "no running" philosophy, kids need to be able to expel some of their high energy output in high energy instruction. Kids should be allowed to run on grassy areas, not just during the 15 minutes that the administration "allows" for P.E..

Okay, just get through this. Do what you have to do to get the marks you need to get your credential. Use what you've observed with your master teacher to decide what not to do. Try to learn some techniques that you will want to use, or at least modify. It takes a number of years to find the 'happy medium' between letting the students run over you and being a martinet. Good luck.

kind of a broad generalization. Sounds like your master teacher and you have different teaching styles. This is a common problem. Most of my friends had the same problem as we went through the credential program.

However, there are all types of management styles for both genders.
I would not say that all female teachers have one way of doing things.

Sometimes a management style can even be a culture at a school. so if you don't agree with a way things are going in a classroom:

1. change it/speak with the teacher if it is so offensive and negative or abusive for the students
2. learn what NOT to do when you have a classroom of your own

The student teacher process is never a perfect experience. I found that you take away from student teaching both what to do and what not to do. it is a place for you to compare yourself to the master teacher and define yourself and your own teaching style.

I am an elementary school teacher with 19 years of experience. I don't think the problem you are describing is a "female" problem, however. Everyone has a different style of teaching and classroom management. Not all styles of classroom management are effective or fair for that matter. You do not mention the grade level at which you are teaching, but I will say that some females that teach upper grades feel that they have to be very structured/strict to demand respect. Also, no one gets into teaching to "vent frustrations" but it is certainly a problem for teachers who become "burned out". Unfortunately, to get your credential you may have to "play the game" until you get your own classroom and then you are all alone to do as you see fit. Good luck in your teaching career.

There really should be a happy medium.

Children do need guidelines and rules, if you establish that you are the boss from day one, they will respect you more, but if you let them do whatever they want and be kids and do as kids do all the time you wont have control over the kids. The key is you do know better what the kids need than they do, and you have to be in control over all of them all the time, and allowing them to do whatever they want will not create a happy atmoshphere for you. Kids do better when they have solid rules and guidelines

children if "LET" go will run all over you, you have to mold them into a certain environment which in this case is an educational one. yes they are kids but they are also future adults and need to be put on the right path, show your leadership as a teacher through fairness but you dont have to be harsh about it. dont take crap though

It isn't all female teachers who do that. Sounds like you have a bad chemistry, which is a shame, but it isn't going to last. When you have your own classroom, you can be the kind of teacher you want to be.
