It's basically the same as the story about the gingerbread man - a long drawn-out shaggy-dog story (the type that parents shy away from reading cos kids love it but it bores adults out of their minds) which involves a repeating cycle of the initial characters joining an ever-growing chain of other characters who then tell the story over and over again to each new person that joins in with the gingerbread-chasing or turnip pulling. As I remember, the huge turnip was stuck in the ground and eventually a large enough collection of local yokels (or animals in some versions) is assmebled to pull it out, then they make soup or something (turnip soup - yuk) out of it. The moral of the story being...umm...society can't get it's turnips out of the ground unless they "pull together", or something. Maybe the turnip represents communism, I dunno...

When I read it as a child, it was called 'The Enormous Turnip"
I believe the moral of the story is something like "many hands make light work "
They basically worked together as a team and in the end, the turnip came up, and I presume they had a lot of turnip soup for some time after- lol !
Good story for a kid.........
Seen it read on different kid's programmes since, and my daughter loves it too !

an old man grows a bloody great turnip. he trys to pull it up but he can't . so his wife pulls him and he pulls the turnip. more of the family come and help untill the whole family + the pets and a few neibours are pulling. the turnip pops out and they all fall down ( very funny if you are 5). then the all eat turnip soup.

the moral is if you get enough people to help you, you can do anything, even pull up giant turnips.

then you can all have turnip soup.

In the end France wins the World Cup, which is what the story was about...if you're old and have a bit of experience and will, you can pull together as a team, take a dive and win the whole enchalada...amazing how those old stories work isn't it?
