The true story of Grimace:
There was a McDonald's restaurant in Pittsburgh, PA, that didn't clean out their deep fryer for one full year. When they finally did clean the sludge out of the bottom, they found a small, furry, purple thing that they believed to be remnants of a scarf that an employee had lost that past January. They put the fuzzy thing aside to show to the employee because she kept claiming that someone had stolen it. The next morning, the fuzzball was gone.
Everyone assumed that one of the rats had taken it for bedding, and no one thought of it again for several years until they noticed that the fryer grease was disappearing overnight. The manager set up a surveillance camera to see if they could figure out what was happening to the grease.
When they gathered to watch the film the next day, they were shocked to see a three-foot fuzzy purple creature emerge from behind a stack of Big Mac Styrofoam containers (this was before they became environmentally friendly and switched to paper containers) and go to the fryer with one of those wide McDonald's straws and suck about three inches of grease out of the fryer.
The next night they waited inside the store for the creature and befriended it. Over the years, Grimace grew to be the huge, friendly, fuzzy, purple McDonald's spokes"person" that we all know and love.
Thus is the story of Grimace.

Grimace is a fantasy character, and not intended to be anything specific. However, ever since the character's introduction there has been much speculation (though much of it tongue-in-cheek) about his appearance. Because the majority of McDonald's characters more or less directly represent a food product sold at the restaurants (ie: Mayor McCheese, Fry Guys, McNugget Buddies, etc) many have naturally tried to guess as to what, if any, food product Grimace is supposed to represent.
A common speculation is that he is supposed to be a giant McNugget, but his appearance pre-dates the release of that food. A better explanation is that he is a taste bud, though there are many more fanciful attempted explanations. In reality, Grimace's "official" role, according to McDonald's, continues to be to represent the chain's famous milkshakes. However, he does this out of love for the taste, and not because he is in any way a shake-based creature himself.
According to the McDonald's website:
Grimace is a big, loving, fuzzy purple fellow who is Ronald McDonald's best friend. He's sure Ronald is the world's ultimate authority on everything. While Grimace loves all McDonald's foods, he's absolutely crazy about milkshakes. Grimace is very enthusiastic and eager to try new things. His joyous spirit helps everyone overlook the fact he's a little slow and clumsy sometimes.

I believe he was Barney the dinosaurs perverted uncle who molested Barney and made him the way he is. Ronald had to press charges so Uncle Grimace went and did some time for his fondling and that's why he hasn't been on any commercials of late! He said the therapy with so many priest's really helped and he's better now.
