If you are running windows you can do a check disk or scan disk and find out and can also possibly repair it.

On most hard drive websites they have an actual tester for that specific hard drive. If you have a Maxtor hard drive it is called PowerMax. I would check out the website of your hard drive to download that. It gives you an exact error code and what is wrong with it.

you can run scandisk, make a right clic on top of your hard drive and go to the properties you'll see there if the scandisk tells you that found errors mmm you better back up your data, 'cause when scandisk find something meas that the HDD is really really in bad shape

by using disk derangement or scan disk or use Norton disk doctor it will appear every thing.and some times the hard disk give some noise when you save on it or the PC give you massage phis' cal dump how ever you better scan your hard disk from time to time and make wash to it.

click window explorer, the in earch c, d .. drives right click of ur mouse and choose properties - then click check disk
