When I was in Basic, my drill sergeant asked us this same question. When I said that I would.. he berated me, and then instructed the right answer was that our job isn't to "sacrifice our lives", but to make sure we make the a**hole on the other side sacrifice theirs. I liked that, and it's stuck with me. I was in Iraq during the first Gulf War, I've been shot at. If I had died, then that was how things were supposed to be. Support our troops, recognize the politicians and media outlets that help put them in harms way for what they are, self serving, greedy arshholes, and remember the cost of Freedom is Eternal Vigilance.

I would sacrifice my life for freedom, but I would not be willing to do it by serving in the military. (I am over 50 and a conscientious objector to all wars.) However, keep in mind that many people in the civil rights movements also sacrificed their lives to preserve freedom. Some were shot by police (students at Kent State), lynched (KKK in the South during the Civil Rights movement), beaten to death (numerous gays, Jews, and others who were "different") etc. It takes just as much courage, committment and patriotism -- perhaps even more -- to stand up for freedom in a nonviolent civil disobedience way. Facing condemnation and ridicule for one's political stances and beliefs can be a form of living martyrdom -- far more difficult to endure that a quick bullet in battle.
And, BTW, those who oppose government policies and/or whistleblow on illegal or questionable actions by the govt are not traitors -- they are the true vanguard of protecting our freedoms. As someone once said, "The price of freedom is eternal vigilance." No government willingly tells you about its covert activities against you -- it is up to the citizens to be the watchdogs about such things. I would rather have the press go overboard reporting things than to have censorship. (And do you really think that the terrorists don't already know we tap their phones? Get real!)
Martin Luther King once said, "Never forget that everything Hitler did in Germany was legal." What does that mean? It means that Hitler's regime just kept passing more laws making their policies legal in order to literally get away with murder. The Nuremberg Laws of 1935, for example, made it legal to discriminate against Jews and others the Nazis did not like. From there, it led to concentration camps. (Keep this in mind next time you find yourself debating the Gay Marriage Amendment. The prejudice in the USA against gays is equivalent to the hatred of Jews in pre-Hitler's Germany. Hitler played on an existing prejudice to create fear and judstify a dictatorship -- and Bush is doing the same by playing on homophobia. Jews were not destroying Germany, and gays are not destroying America. It's all hype. So, true lovers of freedom, beware -- because it may start with the gays that you may or may not care about, but it will ultimately end with YOU!)
So just because the President keeps saying that such-and-such is legal under the law does not necessarily make it right. And "supporting the troops" is not the same thing as supporting everything thier Commander-in-Chief says and does.

As a WWll Vet with the 8th Infantry Div. I have been on the Front and have seen life SACRIFICED. Any volenteer who serves his or her Country knows the Risk, or should before they take the step of joining. I say A-man to those who serve without reservation. And I also think those in high places need a first hand look where the action is.

Yes as soon as all Americans have equality. And that means when a black man can run and win a presidential election, When big business stop seeing hiring a black woman as killing two birds with one stone. ( if you're white and don't know what I mean, It's a common practice to fill a quota with a black woman because you get the credit for hiring a black and a women with one shot, it happens everyday). All thought there are many more inequities that would have to be overcome first, the last I will mention is When rich white guys who get convicted of crimes go the the same prisons as black guys.

Are you a fellow American? Would you defend yourself in war? Then that would be an act of defending all Americans.
I love the quote from a Japanese General in W WII.
"We can never invade the US. There will be a gun behind every blade of grass."

joining the military should not be an option...bring back the draft and make everyone serve a couple years..no exceptions..there is a place for all to serve..even those physically unable..they can do back line work or file clerking...everyone should serve and be a participant in our freedom...not just demand the rights they havent served for...

I did serve, because I had to, and was proud to do so. There is a sense of pride knowing you are helping to keep people safe.
