I met a young lady on HotorNot.com, and we hit it off. We haven't met, but we've IM'd back and forth quite a bit, and some of the conversations became, well, a bit steamy!

During some of our first communications on Hot or Not's website, she clearly told me she was 18 years old (I've saved these messages). Regrettably, as a result of some independent research I've conducted, I have learned that she is only 17.

So my question is really two-fold: am I at "fault" here, and what's the best way for me to extricate myself from this situation? She doesn't know that I know, and we're still on friendly terms.

Not that this has any bearing on the situation, but the age of consent in her state is 16.

For those who seem to be wondering, I have absolutely no intention of pursuing a relationship any further. I would like to avoid hurting her feelings (even though she did lie). Also, I'm well over 18, but well under 40. ;^)

if the age is 16 in her state then you're golden.

How reliable is your source? Could she have had a birthday and actually did turn 18 that your source isn't aware of?
One year is not a big deal to be lying about. Its not like she said she's 18 and you discovered she's only 12.
If the age of consent in her state is 16, it won't matter if she's a year off or not.

You might want to arrange a face to face meeting soon though before you get too attached and decide if this is something both of you want to continue. Sometimes there's other issues to consider that you hadn't thought of when you were just Im'ing each other. So invite her to meet for lunch and go from there.

You forgot to mention how old you are. If you are over like 25...Eww. But she's technically at fault for lying. So as of right now you aren't legally in any trouble. But if you persue this and something bad happens you might be. Call her out. Ask her why she lied.

I don't think you are at fault, she shouldn't have lied about her age. But you should just tell her that you aren't comfortable with the situation because she lied about her age, so what else did she lie about.
I am sorry that young girls continue to lead men on by lying about their age, and then it is the man who gets into trouble for it. Girls, stop lying!

THose laws are in place to prevent 'sexual penetration' with minors (under the age of 16 is some states) etc etc. This is what we mean by the 'legal age'.
Basically if you haven't had sex with her (physical sex) then you are fine. No probs. No worries. You have not broken any laws. Chill.

firts, it depends on how old you are, if you are older than 21-you have no business talking to such a youg girl. She is still just a girl-get that through your head. Just stop talking to her-its that simple.

Not that it matters, but you didn't mention your age.
Ask yourself, are you at fault, or you a victim of her lies?

Easy to break it off. Don't have contact with her. The iggy button works great.
