Andrea Yates committed a horrible crime, but the DA in Texas is wrong in not accepting her obvious severe mental illness. The first jury was wrong to convict her. This business of her knowing right from wrong is nonsense medically for a badly deranged individual.

I don't believe she should get the death penalty although I firmly believe in it. She should be locked away forever and have to suffer the thoughts of what she did. Death to her would be too nice. Someone should though put her head under water to almost death 4 times and let her feel the pain she put her kids through. I believe in a eye for an eye ,but in this case I'd let her suffer.

Post partum depression is SAD..been there...didn't kill my kiddos but I have been there. I think it is so sad that she kept on having babies even though she suffered so terribly from PPD with her prior pregnancies. Sometimes people are clueless. (like Mr. Yates)

When I look at her I see an empty shell of a woman who was in desperate need of medical and psychological help who snapped. And snapped LONG before she drowned her little ones.

I have compassion for women with PPD....it sucks....Medication is available and relief is possible.

She needs to be locked up for life. The reason she didn't get the death penalty is because she is mentally ill.

She became very incorrect and merits to be punished - she must be in the two prision or psychological corporation for existence. yet what i don't get is why her husband/the daddy became by no ability prosecuted for something?? in spite of everything, she supposedly had a background of psychological ailment, and she or he have been on drugs (which she stopped taking), and had the "toddler blues" formerly. He knew the themes and yet did not something. he's merely as accountable as she is for the dying of those undesirable toddlers, leaving them with some psycho. I mean, if I knowingly left my daughter interior the care of a first homicide, and she or he ended up murdered (god forbid), i may be up on expenses so quickly i might have windburn on my butt. So what became the daddy's duty??

She used her mental illness as an excuse but I don't buy it. Plenty of people have a mental illness, plenty of women have post-partum depression, but these people don't violently murder their children. It's just a lame excuse, and she is a disgusting "human being" whom I have absolutely no sympathy for. The people who accept her excuse of mental illness probably cannot grasp the concept of a person who would commit such a horrific crime. It is easier for us as human beings to believe she is sick rather than something else. We cannot accept that a person could be capable of doing this. It's almost like we *hope* she was sick, we don't want to think of another explanation, because it is too hard for us to accept.

She's mentally ill and needs treatment in a long term psychiatric hospital.

The ones who should be prison for the deaths of those children should be her husband and pastor for making an already mentally ill mother feel guilty enough to have more children because they were "gifts from god".

She is mentally ill. That does not excuse the fact that she knowingly killed her own children, and the fact that she systematically drowned the older children first to carry through with the rest of the murders as planned shows calculation and forethought. Mentally ill people do not have such methodical plans of action

If you really want to be cruel to her - take her off the drugs so she remembers everything.
