Psychology is considered by many to be a "soft" science--mostly by the "hard" scientists.

Some aspects of psychology are clearly science, as others have said, but many are half art. half science. Therapy, for example. There is no way for a therapist to quantify or measure and record my reactions to the world around me in order to help me be happier, but he can certainly use the results of hundreds of scientific reports on human behavior patterns to lead him. That's "soft" science.

Now, a psychologist might well record the numbers of people, for example, who were bitten by a dog before the age of three and how they reacted to that compared to those who were bitten after the age of 12, then measure their physiological reactions (an indication of their psychological reaction) to dogs barking. Then she could come up with a theory about how people respond to dog bites at different ages, test it against other evidence and other reports, and others could do the same. That's "hard" science.

So yes, psychology is a science. And no, it's not.

My take on this is that a "real science" involves the application of numbers and the scientific method. I was thinking about this this morning, actually, so funny you should ask that. Seems to me that certain aspects of Psychology can be a science if they involve an experiment, accurate measurements, and the experiment is replicable. If not, then it's not a science.
