I followed the advice re my question about blank screens when I access certain sites. I ran Spyware Doctor at it appears I have files infected by the Hackdoor Backdoor trojan. Is there any free software that will get rid or will I have to pay for some decent software?

Spyware Doctor will have given you the file name, path and location. Write that down then go to a tech forum where you can get specific advice on how to remove it. Theres a forum on Microsofts website.
Remember to turn off System Restore before you run the following progeams, as it will be hiding in there and will re-install itself. You need a dedicated anti trojan, an antivirus such as AVG won't touch it. They are different programs.
I'd also run these programs in safe mode. To get into safe mode, repeatedly press the F8 key after the bios screen loads but before Windows loads, if you don't manage it first time just restart and try again.
Safe mode looks very different and not all your programs will load but don't worry, its supposed to do that. The screen will run at 800 x 600. The scans will take a bit longer so just leave it to get on with it.
I'd start with Avast! antivirus as it also deals with some trojans, then Ewido. See if those can remove it, then Windows Defender.

You can also download Microsofts free Windows Defender from the official Microsoft site, and the Malicious Software Removal Tool.

After you clean this out you need better security precautions on your pc.
The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out. Either of these firewalls are free for personal use and stop unwanted incoming and outgoing traffic. You choose which programs are allowed to access the internet. They are both fairly easy to use and updated regularly.

Buy yourself a decent AV program such as Norton Internet Security 2006, stuff like AVG is a joke for the most part, and doesn't actually do what it claims, most of these free ones are actually a joke, and NIS leaves them all in the dust.
