I like Ribery, a player I had never heard of before the team rosters were announced. The kid is a warrior and with some polish, will be the next great striker in France. Philippe Senderos is also a great young talent, and his absence may have been the difference in the Ukraine game. Asamoah Gyan will be around for a long time as well, I suspect. Tranquillo Barnetta has enormous potential. Shaka Hislop was the best second-string keeper I have ever seen! I knew Stephen Appiah was good, but he looked a little better than I thought. Fred was pleasing in his short appearance. Maxi Rodriguez has fit nicely into Argentina's attack. Klose is playing better than I guessed he could, and I thought fairly highly of him before! Great work ethic. There have been plenty of unpleasant surprises, notably the officials, but the Cup is humming along and I have a feeling we haven't seen the last of the surprises.

This may be a bit biased seeing as I am Australian but the Socceroos did very well in Germany.
They whooped Japan with that great last 10 minute outburst, they lost 2-0 against Brazil (well, that's not really good but we put up a great fight generating many chances) and drew with 1998 semi-finalists Croatia.

Now, in the knockout round of 16 the Socceroos managed to hold up the Italians well ... until that heartbreaking last-8-second penalty decision.
Long live the Socceroos.

And also, Ghana has been a big surprise in this tournament.
Especially when they beat Czech Republic.

Maxi Rodriguez was the most surprising player of the world cup. Who heard of him before this world cup? He has been amazing so far. As far as teams go Australia did much better than expected. A great team overall, with experienced players, they got cheated by the referee. I am an Italy fan, but I feel uneasy about that victory over Australia.

Ghana, ukraine and france.

for france, they surprised everyone by performing not up to expectation in the first round, and then cause a surprise again when they win spain.

I have to say the Ghanaian and T&T players that made things happen. I was really impressed with their game and I think great things are going to happen for them if they keep playing that class of football.
