I have seen some very cute buttons. They are little and colorful sometimes. I guess that saying should only be used when complimenting a girl, right.
I wouldn't mind if someone said I was "cute as a button".

CUTE AS A BUTTON - "cute, charming, attractive, almost always with the connotation of being small, 1868 (from the original 1731 English meaning of 'acute' or clever). Cute as a bug's ear, 1930; cute as a bug in a rug, 1942; cute as a button, 1946. Cute and keen were two of the most overused slang words of the late 1920s and 1930s." From "Listening to America" by Stuart Berg Flexner (Simon and Schuster, New York, 1992.)

Dude, Buttons have always been adorable, it's an insult to the buttons that the button is now just cute!

Well, it's only really comparitive with other fastenings, so cute as a button is definitely a complement. I mean, if you were more comparable to a zipper or velcro you would seriously be in some trouble.

Are you sure it's not cute as a mutton? That would make much more sense.
