Obviously a bike and a wet suit. What else? Do you get suits to wear under your wet suit so you can just take it off and go straight into the cycle?

Swim:
You will not be able to wear a wetsuit unless the water temperature is below 78 degrees, so if you tri is during the summer there is a good chance you don't need to waste money on this. No matter what the temperature is you need some sort of clothing to swim in or else you will be very very naked when you are forced to take off your wetsuit in T1. I would recommend finding a cheap pair of tri shorts so you can swim in them and also bike comfortably since they give padding, and they will also be comfortable for the run. Also for the swim have a pair of goggles and a swim cap.

Bike:
Any bike will work if this is your first tri. There is no point going out and spending a ton of money on a decent road or tri bike only to find out the sport is not for you. Just use whatever bike you currently use. There are people at every tri who use mountain bikes. You must have a helmet also for the bike and some sort of shirt. I would recommend shelling out a little money and get an underarmour shirt because sometimes 100% cotton undershirts tend to make some peoples nipples bleed from rubbing against them. For your first tri use your running shoes for the bike so you save money by not buying cycling shoes and clipless pedals. A pair of sunglasses will also help.

Run:
You already have the shoes and shirt on from the bike and the shorts since the swim

Misc:
You will also want a water bottle on your bike and maybe one in the transition area, and you may want a towel in the transition area to wipe your feet off after the swim so the socks and shoes are easier to get on. Also have a power bar or someother type of energy bar in the transition area or on the bike.

Depending on location you may not need the wetsuit. If the water is going to be in the 60's get one. If it's in the 70's you don't need one. You may opt for a sleeveless suit with short legs opposed to an ankle to wrist suit. It'll be easier to get off at transition.

A speedo under the suit would be ideal.

Goggles. A swim cap will be provided, but get use to wearing one. Running shoes, water bottles etc...
