It depends on the question.
Sometimes you can type a word or question into a search engine and get nothing but cr@p out, none of which answers what you wanted to know.
Sometimes people are just too lazy. I guess some of them are just bored and want someone to answer them, regardless of the question asked.

maybe they don't know how, i know a few people that don't understand how search engines work and they always say they can't find this and that.......maybe it's just easier for them to ask than to spend 2 hours googling all the wrong things. and you're probably right...maybe some of them are lazy...but questions get answered so quickly here and they wanna take the easy route. i say hey...why not??

Isn't this just another way to find information? There are search engines: yahoo is one. But you can get someone to do the work for you and filter out the rubbish. Your question seems to be saying, "What's the point of yahoo answers?"
And you're obviously stupid yourself as you don't realise that you're supposed to capitalise the first letter of each sentence (and "i").

Or even worse, someone asks a question, and the answers go something like 'see your doctor' or 'talk to a a lawyer' or 'do a internet search'. I mean, who doesn't know how to do that? If I wanted to ask a doctor, then I would, but I'm asking the yahoo answers community.

AS BenesofaTeacher said, they want to hear an answer froam a real person. But you can have that on various fora and bulletin boards as well, and get really good answers, not like here where most of the people are chasing those "points".

They want to hear from a person. It's like the difference between asking a friend and looking it up. With a person you might get more personal experience. It's more like a conversation. People just seeking help from other people.

Well this is a question and answer forum. So maybe they think this is where they are suppose to ask such questions. Maybe some people get overwhelmed by search engines.

there are some questions which cannot be found in the search engine. for example, asking advise or conducting poll survey. on the other hand, you are correct, some people are asking nonsense questions here.

Surely asking why people ask stupid questions is a stupid question, and makes the entire debate merely hippicritical.
