Because when soap operas started out on radio then TV they were always sponsored by soap companies.

Because opera's are so dramatic and "like omg" with there singing, and in soap opera's it's the same thing, it's so dramatic. i persoanally can't stand soap operas or operas.

They got the name from back in the 50's and 60's when the sponsors were soap and detergent manufacturers.
Lux, Colgate, Palmolive, etc. It just kind of stuck over time.

because when they first started them they had nothing but commercials for soap in them. the name just evolved from there.
