When refering to crude oil, the Department of Energy's measurement for oil is always in barrels. Why is the acronym for barrel bbl?

technically, its an abbreviation, not an acronym.

an acronym is the first letter of each important word - that usually comes out to be pronouncable as its own word...like ASAP, or NAVY (never again volunteer yourself) or MARINE (muscles are required, intelligence not essential) as barrel, or blue barrel would not fit bbl, it would be an abbreviation.

couldn't come up with real ones off the top of my head, and i thought these two might make people smile....forgot the army one.
