Even though im from Atlanta, I was in the city during the hurricane. I saw the dead bodies and the babies crying. My Aunt and Uncle and their kids and grandkids and I waited for three days on the roof without food. And then to hear some people say, "We must rebuild Iraq," makes me sick. Weren't we supposed to be there ONLY to find nuclear weapons? Do most of the American people feel this way, since the majority of Americans voted for people who belive in rebuilding a country that at first had little to nothing against us?

I'm really sad for the people of New Orleans and hope they they can rebuild their lives along with the damaged parts of the city. I also believe that the United States tries to be everything to everybody in the world. It is difficult for the U.S. to balance what we do at home and abroad. We have gotten ourselves into a situation in Iraq, whether people agree with it or not, that would be entirely wrong to pull our troops out until their able to be better self supportive. It's better to fight terrorism abroad and not here in the States. The disaster in New Orleans was long over due and the blame can be spread out over a local, State, and Federal levels. We were not prepared and hopefully in the future we will be. Iraq is an experiment in Democracy and nation building. Many people take for granted living here. Just keep in mind that it took years for Germany and Japan to rebuild after World War ll.

In theory that would be great! But the Iraqi invasion occured first and George Bush and the rest of the republicans have committed themselves to a line of action in Iraq that would be impossible to pull out of at the moment, not just because it is immoral but because they would be political and economic ramifications that would follow. You can't invade a country, destroy the infrastructure, health system, etc and then take off at your convienance, leaving the country in a state of disarray. Iraq may have been an awful place to live under Saddams rule but at least the country was organised, with its own functioning health and education system, this level of structure is now gone, thanks to our intervening efforts but we as a country have a duty to work together with the Iraqi in rebuilding their nation.

As much as I feel for New Orleans, why not rebuild both at the same time.

P.S. To those that still feel differently - our own wrecked havoc to another country's economy, we need to rectify that! If we don't the US and Britain will be hated by the world!

No, Iraq comes first. The people there can't move out and were stuck there. Those in New Orleans chose to stay. I would help only the elderly and disabled. And now were wasting more money to build dikes for a swamp that is only going to flood again and the poor are only getting to sniff the money. The rich are getting all the help.

You are right about Iraq - WMD was an excuse.

New Orleans should not be rebuilt the way it was - people that live in hurricane-prone areas are targets. You have all the makings of analogy here -

1) civilians in Iraq have become targets as a result of poor governent decisions

2) civilians in a rebuilt New Orleans would become targets as a result of poor government decisions

3) we can avoid 2 by not doing it

Just please keep the trash out of my town.

We aren't? All there is where New Orleans used to be is a giant hole in the ground? Maybe local politicians should be held accountable for that debacle?

Iraq had nothing against us? How about trying to assassinate a president? How about Saddam trying to unite the Arab world under him like a modern day Saladin and destroying the west?

There are enough people in this world that we could absolutely do them both at the same time.Although we should focus our efforts and attention more towards the gulf region [the Gulf of Mexico that is] we should be able to work them simultaneously.More jobs for all, while helping the people in need. Excellent!

unfortunately, no. we should have not gone to iraq, and spent the money at home in the first place. our country is seen as a criminal to many other countries, we provide death. wouldn't we achieve more by offering more humanitarianism and less war?
