It's not selfish at all, it is VERY responsible and caring.

That said, your girlfriend, may still not understand. You need to sit down and talk with her (after sex is the best time, so lie down!). Explain your reasons for working overtime in a calm and loving way - tell her you did make a mistake not discussing it with her and you will be more sensitive in the future (you have to mean this too), but for this time you MUST work to get the funds for the bills.

If you do this in an earnest way, she will understand and love you even more for it.

God Bless, I know it will work out!

I would explain to her that you are short on cash and have the opportunity to make some money on the 4th. You can always make up time with her on another day. Maybe take a personal day off together, just for the 2 of you. Make it a special day. Plan it ahead of time with whatever you do to make each other happy... shopping, camping, fishing, boating, watching a sporting event, picnicing, amusement park, etc.

I am from the Boston area too...plenty of places do fireworks on the 3rd instead. Make a picnic basket with some cheese and crackers and some sparkeling cider and some wine glasses with a blanket....do it up nice and just do it on another night right next to it. Whatever you do, make is a surprise---us girls LOVE that. Also Canobie Lake does them like every weekend......

You gotta do what you gotta do. I agree that you should of asked her, but it could have also started a fight if she was set on going home. The 4th is in the middle of the week so many people wont be going anywhere. Good luck.... hope she thinks you are doing the right thing.

You've done nothing wrong nor are you selfish by signing up to work OT. You're responsible and know that w/o money there would be no roof over your head, food on the table and clothes on your back. There's nothing to make up for, you're doing what you have to do just to survive.
