i have a compaq presario 2100 laptop and i bought a Linksys WPC54G v.3 wireless adapter, i was wondering why can't i get any signal 180ft away from my router but my friends do? someone told me to get a booster or something but do you think there is just some kind of configuration i need to tweak to get a signal?

It could be possible that your router is configured to only communicate using the 802.11b standard. The wireless adapter for your laptop should automatically "step down" to 802.11b to communicate with it, but may not be configured to do so. Check your configuration on both devices to make sure they are both using 802.11g (if your router supports it.) You could also try changing the frequency at which your router broadcasts, you could be receiving interference from something. It also could be that you are beyond the range of the wireless adapter; the one I have has trouble picking up a signal beyond 150 feet. Maybe you should buy the same adapter your friends have, if you can't work out your problems.

Some adapters will get better signal than others. That is the way radio signals are. They can be affected by other signals, and even a wall.

You could get a booster, but try relocating your router first to see if that helps.

erm, if so, you can actually consider getting
1. a wireless adapter with higher power or higher range like buffalo brand which carries high power adapters or linksys wireless N adapter which has very high range
2. you can get edimax usb directional high gain antenna, its about 120 dollars.
3. you can also get other brand's omnidirectional antenna adapter, they come in USB ones too but allows you to change your preferred antenna, so you can use a 15dbi one for it !
