Mg is neseccary for the catalytic reaction. A lot of enzymes have an ion in their catalyitic center which usually co-ordinate the reacting groups.

Catalist: mgcl is a molecule that helps the enzyme to work properly because it activates the enzyme. Look for catalisys on a chemistry book.
