For XP Home Edition, you shouldnt spend more than $40. For XP Pro, you shouldnt spend more than $70.

You should be able to find the software for half the price that Microsoft themselves are selling it for.

Get it from a reputable dealer online or in a retailer near you. Extremely cheap is likely a pirated copy.

If you don't want to spend the money, then you should be looking for open source software. If that's not for you, simply pony up and spend the cash.

If your a student you should be able to buy genuine for 10% cheaper (or something). Look on a trustworthy IT website (not geeksquad.com), and go local because you can get the best support from your local store.

You can get a full verion (w/SP2) for about 80 bucks on eBay.

Beats the $300 to $400 you will spend at Best Buy or CompUSA.
