i had the same problem, only with multiple users and passwords, and i couldnt find which one was logged on as the administrator, so i had to re-install xp from the disc of a relative.
since you seem to mention only one password, its possible that that is the administrator, and you would have full authority to change whatever you wanted.
i don't know for sure though
try here maybe

First choice, find out the password from whoever she got the computer from. Then you can change/delete from the administrator user.
Second choice, try to guess the password. Most people don't take passwords seriously. Try the word "password" or "admin" or just hit the enter key. Or...
Third choice, if there is more than 1 user defined, try logging on to a different user. Maybe all don't have passwords. (You still need to get password for System Administrator user.)
Fourth choice, try ideas from other Answers, other sources.
Last choice, do a "Day 1" System Recovery. This takes the pc back to the way it was when it came from the factory. This is drastic. But it may be your only choice.
During the recovery process it will ask you for a password. Just hit enter and it will leave it at "no password".
Later, you will have to catch up on all the XP security updates, and perhaps other software updates.
Good Luck

I guess the password comes up before the Windows are loaded correct?
If yes the only thing u can do is to reset the Bios. U can read the owner's manual but in some motherboards u just need to take the battery off.
If the password comes when the windows are loaded and u are not interested for the data on the disk ... Then why don't u format the disk and re-install Windows XP?

a password at the very beginning at the start up... before window's even loads... open the case up and take out the little silver battery on the motherboard... leave it out for 30 seconds to a minute and put it back in... when you do so... that password will be gone
